These
installations can vary from just a few thousand litres to
many Mega litres and can service individual farmsteads which
collect and store water for their own purposes to large regional
communities which are serviced from massive holding dams and
serviced through a system of surface canal networks and open
channel reticulation systems.
Certain areas of the world such as sub-Saharan
Africa and the areas immediately around the Mediterranean
are experiencing reducing precipitation levels with much of
what falls not being adequately directed for use into catchment
zones. The net effect of which is that much is lost through
surface runoff and erosion of prime agricultural areas before
entering the River systems.
Water can sometimes be recovered by a system
of pump and store where pumps are located in river courses
on floating pontoons. The water is then pumped to lined storage
ponds where it is settled before being re-applied to the land
as irrigation feed.
Typically, Linings which fall into this category
can be divided , but certainly not limited to the following
application groups: Agriculture / Arable and Horticultural
Holding dams and lagoons / Rose growers.

The Enviro
Dam – free standing portable dam
Yes indeed – there is no cheaper way
to Store water and liquids and no easier way to contain liquids
either for long term or short term and emergency use than
the Enviro Dam.
This
lightweight and freestanding Enviro Dam does not require brick
or concrete walls, nor elaborate foundations and it is used
without the extra cost and hassle of external mesh supports
and wall reinforcement. The floor area simply requires a flat,
smooth and horizontal surface as is the case with all liner
applications – fill the dam and it is immediately ready
to use!
Constructed in pre fabricated units of Durable
/ Non toxic / chemically inert Enviro linings which can be
supplied in black or other colours on request, the Enviro
Dam weighs no more than 50 kg each and can easily be managed
by 2 people. There are no long –term corrosion problems
also and every client can be assured of a lifetime of dependable
and maintenance free service from the Enviro Dam.
This product is a winner all the way from
farmers to firemen; Fish farmers to Construction workers;
Householders to Drill riggers – Everyone has a use for
this versatile and proven product.
The Enviro Dam is easily transported as it
can be folded in half , strapped closed and fits snugly onto
any medium sized “pick-up truck ”, whilst multiple
units can be moved easily on flat bed trailers.
Individual Enviro Dams can easily be equipped
with inlets / outlets / overflows / manifolds / lightweight
covers and can be used in isolation or multiple units can
be simply connected in series to increase total storage capacity.
Standard units come in a variety of sizes
ranging from 0,5m deep x 2,0m diameter to the largest unit
of 1,2m deep x 6m diameter ( This larger one giving a capacity
of just under 30 000 litres allowing for a 150mm freeboard.
Typically, Linings which fall into this category
can be divided , but certainly not limited to the following
application groups: Aquaculture/ Pisciculture / Farm Holding
Tanks / Irrigation tanks / Fire water Tanks / Liquid Fertiliser
Holding dams / Sediment tanks for the construction industry
/ Drilling and Drill mud -slurry holding tanks.

Canals
Canals are linear, shallow, sinuous excavations
in the ground, used in the conveyance of liquids, principally
water, as a means of liquid transfer from one stream course
to another . Typical uses include river diversions and irrigation
projects; laundering of effluents and stormwater control.
Water losses in canals through seepage have
been satisfactorily reduced through the installation of relatively
impervious geomembrane linings over the years . The costs
of more traditionally accepted methods of seepage control
as used in the past have become prohibitive for many canalisation
projects.
In the context of canals, geomembrane linings
are used to prevent flow either into or away from the canal
section in order to:
-
Prevent seepage
loss into the surrounding ground
-
Prevent outflow
of effluent or liquid containment into the surrounding
environment
and
-
Prevent inflow
of effluents from the surrounding environments into natural
water courses.
Geomembrane liners have traditionally been
used in conjunction with the re-habilitation of old unlined
canals, but are now being used more extensively in the construction
of new canal sections either independent of or in conjunction
with selected cover materials such as; concrete, interlocking
blocks or reno mattresses.
The hydraulic performance of any geomembrane-lined canal
will be influenced by the cross-sectional profile as well
as the surface roughness and gradient of the canal along its
flow length.
Those
geomembranes which are best suited to canal construction techniques
are those which are tough, durable and resist long term UV
effects and heavy construction handling. They should be flexible,
whilst exhibiting relatively low coefficients of thermal expansion/
contraction especially if cover materials are required directly
above the lined sections.
Apart from being lightweight and easily transported,(
a definite advantage where construction is required in remote
or areas with difficult access) , the geomembrane lined-canal
has other distinct advantages over more conventional designs
- There is no requirement for formwork nor of construction
joints in the system and no curing time. The liner is inert
and resistant to most chemicals and liquid effluents. The
system can withstand active soils and heaving clays and will
still remain functional if covered with other flexible surface
protection systems such as interlocking blocks.
Typically, Reservoirs which fall into this
category can be divided , but certainly not limited to the
following groups: Irrigation canals/ Solution canals and solution
trenches./ River diversions works.
