Natural
methods of treating contaminated waters and effluent streams
have been well received by environmentally conscious clients
and regulatory groups alike.
This is essentially a system whereby sewage
and effluent is dispersed over beds of growing reeds which
have been planted in suitably prepared beds or soils. Aerobic
conditions are created in these systems by the roots of the
reeds which allow for an improved distribution of oxygen and
produce an acceptable effluent before it is released into
the natural watercourse.
It is within this lined reed bed system that
complex biological, physical and chemical reactions occur
between the plants, the substrate and microbes which result
in effluent purification.
The presence of the vegetation and reeds
themselves is also conducive to the re-regeneration and re-stocking
of Wild Fowl and in the development of bird sanctuaries as
they closely resemble the environment of natural wetlands.
Smaller lined impoundments and lagoons are
used for these projects which serve small communities / roadside
service stations / sports camps / abattoirs and many more.
The liner is generally quite thick ( up to
2 or 2,5mm ) and is often protected on either side by a substantial
geotextile. The liner system is then covered with a layer
of gravel to meet the demands of the drainage design and thereafter
by a further geotextile separator followed by the required
type and depth of soil to accommodate the vegetation.
Typically, Linings which fall into this category
can be divided , but certainly not limited to the following
groups: Reed Beds / Artificial grasslands / Artificial wetlands.
