Typically
these ponds are linked to the closed circuit system of Heap
Leach , Tailings and rock dump facilities and which inevitably
are required to collect and store solutions which are highly
charged with chemicals. These are typically known as Pregnant
solution ponds and generally hold extremely toxic substances
and materials which are potentially hazardous to the environment.
Ponds from The Gold and Copper industries will probably contain
Solutions rich in Cyanide and Sulphuric acids whilst those
linked to the Atomic Industry will contain trace elements
of Uranium, Strontium and other radioactive substances. Those
linked to the Iron and coal industries will be highly charged
with sulphur whilst those associated with the Rare earth metals
can be charged with highly hazardous elements such as carbon
6. Gypsum or fertiliser production facilities can be associated
with Fluo silicic acids.
All
of the above- named products or bi-products and residues are
emplaced in a hydraulic form and residues of much higher concentrations
are formed either by gravity settling or by evaporative effects
of the lagoonal water itself.
The storage of highly charged and concentrated
pollutants presents in itself further challenges in the measures
which are required to protect the environment. More often
than not such facilities are double or even triple –lined
with geomembrane liner / composite liner systems which incorporate
drainage layers / leakage detection layers and combined inspection
/ liquid extraction systems which are located between the
multiple basal liner layers. Other methods employ external
inspection sumps which may be linked to individual compartments
of the basal liner system or employ the use of electrical
resistance surveys for the long-term monitoring of leak related
electric anomalies.
Typically,
Linings which fall into this category can be divided , but
certainly not limited to the following groups: Pregnant and
Barren solution surface imoundments / Stormwater impoundments.
