There
is continual concern over the potential for surface and groundwater
contamination from nearby landfill operations. There is further
concern about the ingress of too much precipitation and stormwater
inflow into landfill sites with the attendant increase in
the volumes of leachate generated.
There is often too great a time lag between
the implementation of the more permanent restoration works
and what needs to be implemented in the immediate term by
way of temporary cover works to prevent excessive leachate
build up and random and uncontrolled migration of gas during
the overall life of the landfill.
The benefits of thin gauge liners acting
as an immediate deterrent to the activities of scavengers
and the further positive features such as immediate improvements
to the noxious and harmful odours and wind –blown scatter
which emanate from landfill sites are important. These features,
however, are secondary in nature when compared with the direct
and immediate cost and time benefits which result from utilising
thin liners as temporary caps which are installed during the
construction cycle. These cost and time benefits are critical
and are measurable savings which are linked to the guaranteed
supply stream of material availability as well as to the guaranteed
level of quality which is achievable from both a material
manufacture and installation perspective. These MQC and CQC
methods are quick to verify unlike the techniques which are
associated to the sourcing and installation of natural materials
such as clay and soil cover.
These
temporary cap liners such as Enviro Cap are typically between
0,3mm and 0,75mm in thickness and whilst they provide immediate
cost benefits to the client and are quick to install , they
have to be installed by Installation specialists who possess
the necessary skills in the handling and welding of thin membrane
covers. Enviro Seal has accrued many years of experience in
this field and would be happy to offer its specialist services
to new clients.
Further cost benefits can be realised by
the pre-fabrication of thin liners into larger modules which
are simply unrolled or unfolded on site and the remaining
in situ welding requirement is reduced to a minimum.
Typically, Linings which fall into this category
can be divided , but certainly not limited to the following
groups Temporary caps and covers / Landfill caps / silage
covers / ash and cover protection / Hazardous and Harmful
Waste segregation covers.
