There
is continual concern over the potential for surface and groundwater
contamination from nearby landfill operations . There is further
concern about the ingress of too much precipitation and stormwater
inflow into landfill sites with the attendant increase in
the volumes of leachate generated. In the longer term, therefore,
it is important that any liner systems employed as a cover
barrier or cap, maintains its integrity over the operating
period required of it.
In addition to the obvious construction activities
which may compromise the integrity of any weak liner system,
the other major concern is the ability of the system to accommodate
the differential movements and settlements which are associated
with consolidating waste bodies over time without losing their
integrity and resistance either to upward migration of gases
nor to the downward migration of precipitation.
In
these situations, liner systems which have a proven resistance
to the gases and condensates of organic wastes are required
in addition to their having all the physical and mechanical
properties which resist puncture and tearing both during and
after construction and where excellent multiaxial properties
are required.
Typically, Linings which fall into this category
can be divided , but certainly not limited to the following
groups: Landfill caps / silage covers / ash and cover protection
/ Hazardous and Harmful Waste segregation covers.
