Basal Linings - landfills and solid waste impoundments

The essential component for environmental protection in Landfills , is the primary geomembrane liner. A properly specified and installed geomembrane liner can hold and divert leachate contaminants and organic landfill pollutants and prevent their entry into the groundwater over a long period of time. Some basal landfill liners have design periods approaching nearly 700 years.

The overall cost of any liner system is often only a fraction of the total project cost and yet it frequently is the most critical element in the protection of the environment.Clients should not take the short sighted route of opting for the cheapest alternative which may turn out to be more expensive in the longer term.

Slope stability and waste stability are important considerations within the basal lining to any landfill cell . The smooth HDPE linings are well suited to the relatively flat conditions of the base , but where steeper side slopes are required it is often desirable to opt for linings with textured surfaces which can help to resist any sliding movements at the interface between the liner surface and the waste body itself.

There now exists a great awareness and responsibility of the public towards the protection of the environment as there is also an increased understanding of the design requirements for basal liner systems of landfill in terms of foundation designs, chemistry, temperatures and longevity of the landfill cell itself.

The essential elements for the basal liner system are made up of the leachate collection system within the liner cover / protection layer.; the primary liner system which is usually a Minimum of 2,0mm HDPE; the leachate detection / collection zone if applied and then a basal composite layer using a GCL and /or a compacted low permeability soil.

The licencing and permitting of sites before construction and closure of landfills is now mandatory and within Europe there are directives in place which determine the selection criteria for linings in certain critical applications.

Typically, Linings which fall into this category can be divided , but certainly not limited to the following groups: Landfill cells / Solid Waste Impoundments.
