With
the ever increasing demands for conventional agricultural
products from an incessantly burgeoning society it is necessary
to keep a balance on what is available to meet Society’s
future food requirements. This is particularly poignant when
it is put in to the context of population groups who are needy
and who are not able or capable to purchase nor to provide
for their own needs in terms of a sustainable system of agriculture.
Water based farming methods have proven to be simple, cost
effective and to provide population groups with all the nutrients
they require to follow a healthy well balanced diet. Typical
farming methods employ the use of Tilapia, Prawns and shrimps
and freshwater crayfish. Trout and Perch.
The lining of freshwater ponds and lagoons
for the rearing and harvesting of these diverse forms of aquaculture
can be simply and effectively undertaken by the use of flexible
geomembrane liners whose key properties, in the Polyethylene
range are especially well suited to Aquacultural activities
in that they are durable, non toxic and chemically inert.
These linings enhance water quality, will
not discolour nor cause distaste to water which are vital
properties when considering their use for foodstuffs to be
ingested by humans.
On the practical side, because the Enviro
Seal Liner systems are smooth and will not
readily attract micro-biological activity they improve pump
efficiencies and ease cleaning operations of the aquaculture
system – In so doing they also minimise any potential
that may exist for disease by allowing a higher level of hygiene
management to be applied to these facilities.
The lining of these facilities prevents entry
of groundwater pollutants from entering the food chain, whilst
at the same time prevent faecal and waste deposits from entering
the groundwater. The management of the system is facilitated
by the fact that pond volumes remain constant which means
that there is less variability in operating water temperatures
which improves the quality of the final crop. For the owners
of such facilities the inevitable benefit is that of improved
profit potential.
Typically, Linings which fall into this category
can be divided, but certainly not limited to the following
groups: Ponds / Tanks / Raceways/ Hatcheries/ Fish production
/ aquaculture/ Mariculture.
