The
use of flexible geomembrane liners has now reached the point
of almost universal application where many projects have geomembrane
linings as specified elements in the design. The liner is
sometimes used as the material of preference over those which
a decade or so ago were regarded as conventional construction
products both in terms of type and application, but more frequently
are now used as essential elements as required by regulatory
bodies. Geomembrane linings provide both technical and cost
advantages over what may be regarded as traditional structures
in many ways , but really come into their own where construction
methods over heaving or dispersive clays , collapsing sands
and active soils are required and in which situations conventional
structures make crack or joints may open and leak.
The
cost benefits as calculated against the use of natural materials
are also as legion as the materials themselves. The calculation
is based on the volume / thickness of Natural substrate or
cover which can be reduced in thickness or even eliminated
by the use of geomembrane liners ( rarely more than a few
mm thick ) which are just as , if not more effective than
several cm or m of natural soil when they are selected , designed
and constructed correctly. Their uses are even more beneficial
when the aspect of void or airspace saving is taken into consideration.
The advantages of using geomembrane liners
and of geosynthetic-lined systems are that they are produced
according to strict MQC procedures and installed to strict
CQA methods and therefore the properties of the finished linings
as well as the final installed liner system can be completely
verified.
In
Reservoirs, geomembrane liners are used in the containment
of a wide variety of liquid, viscous and solid materials either
as holding ponds and /or for the protection of the local environment.
A carefully specified material will possess the necessary
durability and chemical resistance qualities for the long-term
use in fully exposed environments.
The use of High quality liners can ensure
the safe, long –term storage of potable and raw water
as well as for hazardous and toxic effluents.
